Through the flow of air the fossilized flash reawakens as audible vibration
Formed by the fusion of silica sand from a lightning strike, this rare glass-like tube captures one of nature’s most powerful phenomena in mineral form - transformed into a wind instrument. Lightning is a high-energy electrical discharge, a natural act of re-balance, occurring either within clouds or between the atmosphere and Earth's surface. Its intensity can heat the surrounding air to over 30,000 Kelvin which is five times hotter than the surface of the sun. This flute, crafted from fulgurite, is more than an instrument: it is an artifact of impact, a conduit of electricity, a vessel of elemental memory. Geformt durch die Verschmelzung von Siliziumsand infolge eines Blitzeinschlags, fängt diese seltene, glasartige Röhre eines der kraftvollsten Naturphänomene in mineralischer Form ein. Ein Blitz ist eine hochenergetische elektrische Entladung, ein natürlicher Akt der Wiederherstellung des Gleichgewichts, der entweder innerhalb von Wolken oder zwischen der Atmosphäre und der Erdoberfläche auftritt. Seine Intensität kann die umgebende Luft auf über 30.000 Kelvin erhitzen. Das ist fünfmal heißer als die Oberfläche der Sonne. Diese aus Fulgurit gefertigte Flöte ist mehr als ein Instrument: Sie ist ein Artefakt des Einschlags, ein Leiter der Elektrizität, ein Gefäß elementarer Erinnerung. Durch den Luftstrom erwacht der versteinerte Blitz als hörbare Vibration erneut zum Leben.
Formed by lightning, the fulgurite flute holds an extreme event in mineral form.
This fulgurite flute functions as a resonant amplifier of sound. As a naturally formed glass tube, it shapes and intensifies specific frequencies, positioning it as a distinct wind instrument. Developed in dialogue with astrophysicist Michel Breitfellner, the work extends from geophysical event to sonic articulation.
In collaboration with flute maker and musician Stefan Kronsteiner and producer André Lehner, we are developing an album exploring a range of fulgurite flutes in interaction with the elements.
