Through the flow of air, the mineral trace of a lightning strike reawakens as audible vibration.
Lightning is a high-energy electrical discharge, a process of equalization between clouds and Earth. In a single instant, the surrounding air reaches temperatures of up to 30,000 Kelvin, about five times the temperature of the Sun's surface. In sand, the energy of the discharge transforms quartz into glass.
What remains is a fulgurite: a hollow, branching structure in which the path of lightning materializes, holding an extreme event in mineral form.
In the Fulgurite Flute, this geological trace becomes a resonant body. Through the flow of breath, the mineral trace of a lightning strike reawakens as sound.
Ein Blitz ist eine hochenergetische elektrische Entladung, ein Ausgleichsprozess zwischen Wolken und Erde. Binnen eines Augenblicks steigt die Temperatur der umgebenden Luft auf bis zu 30.000 Kelvin, etwa das Fünffache der Sonnenoberfläche. Im Sand transformiert die Energie der Entladung Quarz in Glas.
Was bleibt, ist ein Fulgurit: eine hohle, verzweigte Struktur, in der sich der Weg des Blitzes materialisiert und ein Extremereignis in mineralischer Form bewahrt.
Als Fulgurit Flöte wird der vom Blitz geformte Glaskörper zum Instrument. Durch den Luftstrom tritt die mineralische Spur des Blitzes erstmals als Klang hervor.
Formed by lightning, the fulgurite flute holds an extreme event in mineral form.
The individual form of each fulgurite shapes how the air vibrates within it and the sound that emerges. The fulgurite is both geological record and instrument. Barbara Husar developed the Fulgurite Flute in dialogue with astrophysicist Michel Breitfellner, tracing the passage from geophysical event to sound. Together with flute maker and musician Stefan Kronsteiner and producer André Lehner, the project continues in the album FLUX FULGUR: a series of fulgurite flutes in interplay with the elements that brought them into being.

Die individuelle Form jedes Fulgurits prägt den Weg des Atems und den daraus entstehenden Klang. Der Fulgurit ist geologisches Zeugnis und Instrument zugleich.
Barbara Husar entwickelte die Fulgurit Flöte im Dialog mit dem Astrophysiker Michel Breitfellner und verfolgt darin ein geophysikalisches Ereignis von seiner materiellen Einschreibung bis in den Klang. Gemeinsam mit dem Flötenbauer und Musiker Stefan Kronsteiner und dem Produzenten André Lehner setzt sich das Projekt im Album FLUX FULGUR fort: eine Reihe von Fulguritflöten im Zusammenspiel mit den Elementen, die sie hervorbrachten.
