This is an old shoe with a buckle that I found in the desert.
My diploma at the University of Applied Arts consisted of a suitcase full of empty cigarette packets, whose inner surface I have traversed crossover through all classical printmaking techniques. The starting point for this was worn out footwear, which I often encountered during my travels in the desert and whose buckles moved me to a higher overall understanding of connections. Printing was close to me because I like to develop space over layers. I wasn't interested in the production of series in the form of editions. Rather, I was drawn to the development of original cycles. I combined screen printing, lithography and etching with cyanotopy and hand drawing.
The title of my diploma was “Buckling takes time”. Buckling in german also refers to catching the meaning of something. For one week I presented my graphic case in the inner courtyard of the university around a fireplace.
With this staging I defined the space by centering and not by limitation. This made it possible for me to underline the perspective on the outline of the image support. The disassembled ground plan of the cigarette packs communicates detached openness and plasticity on the surface and is also an ambiguous background. Lifestyle and hospitality around this fireplace corresponded to the nomadic culture. I cooked Bedouin tea on the fire and served it before opening the suitcase with the graphics with the remark 'Buckling takes time' The cultural technique referred to the wider horizon inherent in all the original series, each of which is stored in an old silver cigarette box in the same suitcase.
“Buckling takes time” communicates mobility of understanding. For this reason, the individual graphics on cigarette boxes are referred to as tickets to coordinate. I myself also needed some time to understand the dimension of the applied coordinate system. At that time there was already a silver cigarette box equipped with the motive coordinates: Milky way, DNA and umbilical cord.
Mein Diplom auf der Universität für angewandte Kunst bestand aus einem Koffer voller leerer Zigarettenschachteln, deren Innenseite ich crossover durch alle klassischen druckgraphischen Techniken geschleust habe. Ausgangsbasis dafür war ausgetretenes Schuhwerk, welches mir des öfteren bei meinen Wüstenreisen begegnete und deren Schnallen mich zu einem höheren Gesamtverständnis von Zusammenhängen bewegt haben. Die Druckgrafik war mir nahe weil ich Raum gerne über Ebenen entwickle. Mich hat die Produktion von Serien in Form von Auflagen wenig interessiert. Vielmehr zog es in mir zur Entwicklung von Originalzyklen. Siebdruck, Lithografie und Radierung kombinierte ich mit Cyanotopie und Handzeichnung.
Eine Woche lang präsentierte ich im Innenhof der Universität rund um eine Feuerstelle meinen Grafikkoffer. Mit dieser Inszenierung habe ich den Raum über eine Zentrierung definiert und nicht über eine Begrenzung. Dies ermöglichte mir die Perspektive auf den umrissenen Bildträger zu untermalen. Der zerlegte Grundriss der Zigarettenschachteln kommuniziert vordergründig eine losgelöste Offenheit und Plastizität und ist zudem mehrdeutiger Hintergrund. Der Lebensstil und die Gastfreundschaft rund um diese Feuerstelle entsprach der nomadischen Kultur. Ich habe Beduinentee gekocht am Feuer und vor der Betrachtung des graphischen Innenlebens mit der Bemerkung `Schnallen braucht Zeit ́ serviert. Die Kulturtechnik bezog sich auf den weiteren Horizont, der allen Originalserien inne ist, die jeweils in einer silbernen Zigarettendose in ebendiesem Koffer verwahrt sind.
»Schnallen braucht Zeit« kommuniziert Mobilität des Verstehens. Die einzelnen Grafiken auf Tschickschachteln werden aus diesem Grund als Koordinatentickets bezeichnet. Ich selbst habe auch einige Zeit gebraucht um die Dimension des angewandten Koordinatensytems zu verstehen. War doch schon damals eine silberne Zigarettendose bestückt mit den Motivkoordinaten: Milchstraße, DNA und Nabelschnur.
